Harry Ritchie Knight

Obituary of Harry Allenby Ritchie Knight

Harry was born in Edmonton on April 22, 1918 and passed away peacefully on October 6, 2006 at the age of 88 years. All those who knew Harry know that he was quite a character and had a passion for knowledge and a love of debate. Harry proudly served as a Second Lieutenant with Canadian Armed Forces during World War II. He met and married Irene in 1945 while stationed at Petawawa, ON. Irene and Harry then moved west to start a family and Harry joined the Royal Bank where he worked until he retired in 1978. After retirement he pursued his lifelong dream of going to University and achieved a degree in Physical Education in 1982 at the age of 64. Undaunted, he looked for his next challenge and started training for the Hawaii Marathon and accomplished this goal at the age of 70. While he was training, he volunteered at the 1988 Winter Olympics. Harry also enjoyed sharing his life experience by giving motivational talks to senior groups on the benefits of physical fitness. Throughout his entire life, Harry was an inspiration to all, sharing his passions and wisdom, and always setting the bar just a little bit higher. Harry is survived by his wife Irene; his son Allen; his daughter-in law Joy; his grandchildren Shannon (Jason) and David (Claire); and his great grandchildren Ethan and MacKenzie. He was predeceased by his daughter Barbara and his sister Dorothy Smith. Harry will be sadly missed by his sisters Yvonne Sutherland (George), Lois LaRue and numerous nieces and nephews.
