Caroline Dunsmore

Obituary of Caroline Dunsmore

Caroline, much beloved by all her family and friends, died on Sunday, September 17, 2006 at the age of 73 years. Caroline was stricken with polio in her last year of high school. She spent the next five years in the Banff Springs Hospital. After a long rehabilitation, she returned to Calgary and pursued a music career, studying voice and teaching theory to young children. Caroline had a beautiful Mezzo voice and gave many concerts and particularly loved her choral work with many church choirs. Later, Caroline furthered her education and earned her B.A. in Psychology at the University of Alberta. While working at the Children’s Hospital, Mr. Price suggested, because of her disability, and her wonderful way with children, she might like to study Speech Therapy. She then earned her Masters of Speech Therapy from the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1969. She spent the next twenty years at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and became Director of Speech and Hearing. Caroline also took part in the planning of the new Comprehensive Health Centre for children. She was very loving and caring, with great courage and strength of character. Caroline was always very supportive of her family and friends. She always maintained her great sense of humour which carried her through her many life’s challenges. Thanks to Caroline’s friends for their love and support and particularly her very special caregivers. We love you dearly Caroline and you will always remain in our hearts. Caroline is survived by her two sisters, Shirley Maguire (Clifford, deceased) and Christine Day (Allan) and many more members of her large family. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Gertrude and Wilford Dunsmore; brothers, Grant (Mary), Robert (Shirley), John (Deborah), Richard (Jo Claire), her dear friend Ruth Cripps and her beloved cat Christie.
