Laura Borgal

Obituary of Laura Ellen Borgal

Laura Ellen Borgal (nee Connor) of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the McKenzie Towne Care Centre on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 in her 97th year. She was predeceased by her husband, Emerson in 2004 and their only son, David in 1962. Laura met Emerson in high school. They went to Normal School in 1929, married in 1931, and devoted the rest of their lives to education and their family. She stayed home with her young family and added to those family duties after World War II by accepting a teaching position in a one room Beiseker area school, while Emerson finished a post graduate degree in Chicago. Laura and Emerson both taught in the rural school systems, including Trochu and Consort, and returned to Calgary in the late 1930s. She worked as a legal secretary for a prominent Calgary Law firm for several years until returning to teaching with the Calgary School Board in 1958. She taught in Elboya School before going to William Aberhart High School, where she taught Business School until taking the role of Dean of Girls and head of the guidance department. Laura was awarded a Centennial Medal for her contributions to Education in Alberta. She enjoyed golf and many friends and associations at the Earl Grey Golf Course, as she did their many good friends and associations during their years at the Glencoe Club. Laura maintained a strong interest in the arts as she was a classically trained violinist, a dancer and an accomplished hobby artist in her early retirement. Laura’s life changed drastically when she was diagnosed with dementia in 1996. Although she had been in Care Centre care for the past ten years, she has remained a joy to her family who will forever remember her kind, loving spirit and unconditional love. Laura is survived by her daughters, Barbara of Ottawa, and Linda of Calgary; grandchildren, David (Anna) Moore, Carleen (Ron) Ridley, Janice (Hakan Tongul) Moore, Roger (Susan) Holm, Bob Holm, and Debbie (Garet) Laub; as well as great-grandchildren, Aaron and Lauren King-Moore, Brayden and Kendra Ridley, Kayra and Devin Moore-Tongul, Gabrielle and Brittaney Laub and Paris Holm. A Private Family Memorial Service will be held in loving memory of a Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at McKenzie Towne Care Centre for their wonderful, kind and supportive care.
