Obituary of Stephen James Arney

Stephen James Arney passed away peacefully on September 6, 2006. For the last five years he has battled cancer with courage. Armed with determination and a sense of humour, he fought his disease with integrity and strength. Always one to have the last word, Stephen wrote the following: It is time to say goodbye to this world and those that I have met in my travels. To my special lady and wife Janet, you have made my journey a great joy of love and happiness that I shall take to the next level. A sad farewell to my children, Lisa (Troy) Bowker of London, England, Jeanelle (John) and Terra (Andrew) of Calgary; my granddaughters, Ashley and Jayme; my grandsons, Kolten and Lachlan. Children are the only true legacy you leave behind and you all have made me very proud. Please don’t be sad. It is I that thank you for making my life fulfilling, worthwhile and loving. I will miss my dear mother Serena Recchia of Englehart, ON, whom I love dearly; my brothers, Henk Wijngaard of Holland, and Danny Recchia of Kitchener, ON; my sister Bonnie Haywood of Burnaby, BC; as well as to my best friend Don Bates, a special goodbye. No man has had a truer pal. To Moe and the gang at Legion 285; your kindness and humour as my time neared was very special. To those I touched in my life and at the workplace or playing hockey you all meant so much in your special ways. I am most grateful. For those that may follow me, I will have tee times made, ice time booked, pool tables cleaned, refreshments handy, and fishing poles set. A Celebration of Steve’s Life will be held at the family residence on Sunday September 10, 2006, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., for family and close friends. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Eastern Slopes Grizzly Bear Project, Faculty of Environmental Design, University of Calgary, 2500 University Drive N.W., Calgary, AB, T2N-1N4. Our family would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. P. Dunham and his nurse Val for their extraordinary care and compassion.
