Obituary of Sarah Friel

Sarah Friel of Calgary, passed away quickly and peacefully at the Mayfair Care Centre on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at the age of 92 years. Sarah was born in Stellarton, NS on July 24, 1914, she attended school in New Glasgow, NS and then went to Moncton, NB where she graduated from the Moncton Hospital School of Nursing in 1936. She remained on staff there as a supervisor until she joined the R.C.A.M.C. in 1940. She served in Canada, North Africa, Sicily, Italy and England until 1945. She was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Afterwards she was employed as a Public Health Nurse in the Moncton schools, initially by the Moncton Board of School Trustees and later the New Brunswick government. Sarah will be missed by Mike and Susan Lavery of Calgary; grandson, John (Emily) and Will; nephews, Harold Baird and Gerald Munro; and nieces, Beverly Wilson and Mildred Rae and their respective children. She was predeceased by her husband John E. Friel K.C. of Moncton in 1950; daughter Sally Friel Lavery of Calgary in 1997; parents, Hugh S. and Georgina Munro; her sister Jean (Munro) Baird; and by her brother William (Marjorie) Munro.
