Obituary of Winnie Kumlin

Winnie Kumlin passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care Center Cochrane on Wednesday, August 16, 2006. Winnie was born May 10, 1914 in the Cochrane Hospital to Nan and Jack Copithorne. Winnie is survived by her daughter Lorraine (Doug) of Lethbridge and her son Alvin (Ann) of Jumping Pound and the love and pride of her life grandchildren Nan, Robyn and Matthew. Winnie was predeceased by her sister Jean and her husband Len, her soul mate of sixty-one years. The first four years of Winnie?s life was spent at the Lone Star Ranch, later moving with her parents to the main ranch. She rode to and attended the Jumping Pound School for all but her final year, which she took at Cochrane High School. During that year, she lived with her Aunt and Uncle, Lottie and Claude Copithorne and cousins Olive and John on their dairy farm on the Cochrane hill. Following high school, Winnie stayed at the ranch helping her mother and father. In 1936, she attended Olds Agricultural College for two years followed by a year at a business college in Calgary. The unappealing city life and the call of the rural ways were too strong and Winnie returned to the ranch. During WWII, she worked at the Victory Loans office as a campaign officer. While working in Cochrane, she met a young bank teller and the relationship flourished into the marriage of Len and Winnie in 1942. Len and Winnie took over the ranch at Jumping Pound until their retirement to Calgary in 1975. This time Winnie embraced the city life and developed many new relationships with friends from Calgary. Although active local adventurers prior to retirement, Len and Winnie began to travel extensively throughout the world by plane and ship. Their summers were spent travelling locally with their many motorhome friends. Winnie enjoyed hosting dinner parties followed by bridge, whist or 500. She was passionate about gardening, photography, and many crafts that were inherited, self taught or learned at adult education courses. She was actively involved in the publication of Chaps and Chinooks and the Copithorne Centennial history books. Funeral Services will be held at St. Andrew?s United Church (128 ? 1st Street East, Cochrane) on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Donald E. Koots, Presider.
