Obituary of Lucia Caranfa

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our mother and Nonna, Lucia Caranfa (Prozzi) on Sunday, August 6, 2006 at the age of 93 years. Lucia was born on October 4, 1912 in Villalago, L’Aquila, Italy, to established landowners. As a youth, she learned the skills of cultivation, harvest and tending to livestock at a time when rural labour was done by hand. On December 31, 1933, she married Salvatore Prozzi and together they had two daughters. They celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary just months before Salvatore’s death in 1997. Lucia was a hard working, adaptable person. At 56 years of age, she moved with Salvatore to Athol, MA to be near her aging mother and her brother’s family. While in the USA, she worked at a wooden toy manufacturing plant, learned some English, and never giving up the land, she planted a vegetable garden annually. Lucia and Salvatore returned to Italy in 1973 where she lived until his death. We were blessed to have had Nonna with us in Calgary these past nine years. Living with her daughter and son-in-law on their acreage, she maintained her connection to the land and animals. Nonna made pasta, crocheted bedspreads, said the daily Mass and Rosary, and until the day she had her stroke, worked the vegetable garden. Her warm kisses and broad smile endeared her to everyone she met. Lucia’s happiest times were with her family, especially her great-grandchildren. She left us as a strong and vibrant person. Lucia is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Vittorina and Silvestro Sciore, and Albina and Pasquale Buccini; her grandchildren Aurora (Richard) Musto, Anna Buccini (Bob Nowakowski), Lucia Buccini, and Adelmo (Carolyn) Sciore. She also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren: David, Michael, Jessica, Chantel, Stefan, Rachel, Nicolas and Andrea; as well as many loving friends who would stop by “per una goccia di cafÚ”. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Grace Italian and English Catholic Church (1714 – 14th Avenue N.E.) today, August 11, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Emanuel Buttigieg Presider. Lucia will be laid to rest at a later date in the family chapel in Villalago, Italy. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to thank everyone on units 111 and 112 at the Foothills Medical Centre for their care and compassion. In living memory of Lucia Caranfa (Prozzi,) a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296.
