Obituary of Russell Savage

Russell (Russ) Rowland Savage, beloved husband of Irene Savage of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at the age of 59 years. Russ was born June 7, 1947 in Regina, SK. and was raised in Victoria. He received his undergraduate degree from UVic and his Ph.D from Queen’s University in Kingston, ON. Russ taught philosophy at The King’s College in Edmonton where he was a founding faculty member. He continued his education at the U of A where he earned his law degree and was admitted to the Bar in 1988. He continued working as a crown prosecutor at both the provincial and federal levels, serving until shortly before his passing. In 2003, Russ was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), a neuromuscular disease that progresses rapidly and for which there is no known cure. Russ’ courage throughout the progression of this disease was remarkable. While his speech and mobility became limited, his attitude in the face of such challenges was extraordinary. Besides his loving wife Irene, Russ will be sadly missed by his two sons, Alistair of Ottawa and Malcolm of Halifax. Funeral Services will be held at St. Giles Presbyterian Church (1102 – 23rd Avenue N.W.) on Tuesday, July 4, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. David Vincent, Presider. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the A.L.S. Society of Alberta (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), Suite 400, 320 – 23 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2S 0J2.
