Janet Poffenroth

Obituary of Janet Livingstone Poffenroth

Janet was born in Glasgow, Scotland on June 23, 1911 to Peter and Margaret (Scott) MacBeth and lived most of her life in the DeWinton area. She passed away peacefully at home on her 95th birthday. She came to Calgary with her mother after the loss of her father in WWI. They settled on New Street in Inglewood, and Janet attended Col. Walker and William Haultain schools. In 1932 she married Walter Poffenroth and moved to the family farm in DeWinton where she remained except for the war years when Walter worked in the Turner Valley oilfields. Typical of true prairie women, Janet enthusiastically adapted to the demands and rigors of farm life. Her determination and warm personality led to her active participation in the community, serving as President of the Ladies Auxiliary and also belonging to the famous DeWinton Ladies Sewing Circle for over fifty years. Janet was an avid curler and belonged to the old Victoria Park Curling Club. She loved the animals she worked with and in her later years became an interested bird watcher. Janet was a devoted mother and grandmother who had a great zest for life and people. Janet is survived by a daughter Barbara (Keith) Groves; a son Robert (Donna) Poffenroth; four grandsons, Maury, Richard, David (Susan), and Corey (Melanie); five great-grandchildren, Samantha, Steven, Chloe, Alyssa, and Arianna; a sister Margaret Marks; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Walter in 1987; an infant son; brother Murdock McLellan; and sister Muriel Heaver. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at 12:30 p.m. with the Rev.
