Obituary of Eleanor Louise Meredith
Eleanor Meredith of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2006 at the age of 71 years.
Eleanor was born in Cavendish, PEI on July 29, 1934 to Marjorie and Cyril Smith. She was a twin weighing approximately one pound and despite this beat all the odds with tremendous strength, courage and determination. Those same attributes allowed her to fight the many health problems she encountered and to face them with a wonderful sense of optimism and humour. Everything was always fine. At seventeen years of age, Eleanor moved to Ontario where she eventually married and had two children, Patricia Louise and Karen Elizabeth. Eventually, Eleanor moved back to Hunter River, PEI where she worked as a telephone operator and raised her two girls as a single Mom, but always acknowledged the tremendous help she got from her family. In 1975, Eleanor followed her daughter Pat and her sister Margie to Calgary, where she began work at the Federated Co-op and became well known as “Mom” to many of the youth working there at the time. After her retirement from the Co-op she began babysitting and in the process help to raise her two beloved nieces, Ashley and Kelly, who confused people by calling Eleanor, “Grammie Ellie”. Eleanor’s passions included her cats, watching hockey, baseball, horse racing, wresting, listening to hymns and eating out – well, eating in general. She was very proud of being from her beloved Prince Edward Island and will return there to rest peacefully for eternity.
Besides her two loving daughters, Pat and Karen (Murray), Eleanor is survived by her grandson David (Stacey); granddaughter Kimberly (Darcy); and her great-granddaughter MacKenzie, who was a gift from God that helped Eleanor through her final years. She is also lovingly remembered by her ninety-one year old mother Marjorie; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Elmer (Joan), David (Diane), Clark (Dottie), Neville (Helen), Grant (Claire), and Wendell (Betty); and by her sister Marjorie whom she shared a special relationship with, they were best friends as well as sisters. Eleanor is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will always remember the joy and laughter Eleanor (A.K.A. Tiffany) brought to their lives. Eleanor was predeceased by her father Cyril in 1998.
