Obituary of Otto Friedenreich

Otto Friedenreich died peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer. Otto was born in Brasov, Romania on August 14, 1927 where his Belgian parents lived as expatriates. He left Romania at age eleven to attend boarding school in Switzerland where he lived until he completed his doctorate in geophysics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. It was in Zurich where he met Doris and they were married in 1957 and immigrated to Calgary in 1959 where Otto began his career with Shell Canada as an exploration geophysicist. After retiring from Shell in 1986, Otto enjoyed working as a consultant for many years in several international locations. During these latter years, he and Doris travelled throughout the world and returned frequently to Europe to visit family and friends. Otto was a kind, gentle man who appreciated most being with his family in some favourite locations in the Rockies, listening to classical music, photography and hiking. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all those whose lives were touched by him. Otto is survived by his loving wife Doris (nee Jenny), his daughters Christine (Steven Kennett) of Calgary and Annette (Franki Gestel) of Toronto; two granddaughters Louisa and Juliane Kennett, and his sister Elisabeth Gepts-Friedenreich of Antwerp, Belgium.
