Obituary of Jean Berry

Jean Berry was born on November 3, 1922 in Lashburn, SK. She died as she lived – with grace and peace on Friday, May 19, 2006. Jean Berry, beloved wife of the late Group Captain Grover Berry, DFC, CD and daughter of Virgil and Pauline Cressman. Cherished mother of Victoria (David Drake), Peter (Lynn Berry) and John (Nicole Moen). Loving, energetic and playful grandmother of Matthew, Jessica and Hannah. Jean was a friend, confidante, patient listener and a lively, dry, witty conversationalist around the kitchen table, across at least three generations and on two continents. As a lifelong volunteer for countless charities and good causes, she particularly loved caring for disabled infants and children. A voracious reader who trolled bookstores and fed a healthy addiction to the literary arts, Jean was always saving a few dozen volumes to “read in my old age”. An eclectic gourmet, she loved to have lunch around town, the spicier the better. She wore purple with pride and daring all her life, never missing a chance to put on a costume; Halloween was a favourite holiday. A proud native of Saskatchewan (where “there really are hills, you just have to look for them”), Jean was grounded in the realities of childhood in the dirty ’30’s with a practical view of living from life on a farm, and a keen, caring appreciation of people and life in all forms. She was equally happy and at ease waltzing with royalty at Buckingham Palace, enjoying Grey Cup parties at the Sergeant’s Mess, or making her famous buns for family Sunday dinners. Mom (Jean, Jeannie) had a full life and she will be hugely missed.
