John (Ivan) Golebiowski of Calgary, passed away peacefully at Foothills Hospital on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14, 2006 at the age of 86 years. John was born in Konuchy, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. He grew up with strong values of family, nationality, hard work and education. He carried these values through his life. Following his mothers character, John led by example and principle, overcoming the many challenges he faced in Ukraine, Europe and Canada. As patriarch to his large family in Ukraine and family in Canada, John maintained close contact with and supported many family members over the decades since coming to Canada. He especially enjoyed time with friends and family, whether working, playing cards or out in natural surroundings. A voracious reader, John loved fiction and non fiction. He used his bright intellect to follow current events in Canada and Ukraine closely until his recent hospitalization. John is survived by Darka (Teodosia), his devoted wife of fifty-five years; children, Irene and her husband Scott Leyland of Rossland, BC., Walter Golebiowski and his wife Sharon of Calgary; grandchildren Orest, Mike and his wife Lynn, Laura and Steven; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Marissa and Taylor. John is also survived by his brother William Holubowsky of Kitchener, ON.and several cousins, nieces and nephews in Ukraine. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and a sister .
