Obituary of Gertrude Hazel Sangster

A mother holds her children’s hands for a while, their hearts forever. On Thursday, May 11, 2006, Gertrude Hazel Sangster (nee Trotman), beloved wife of Ken Sangster of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre at the age of 80 years. Gert was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and caring teacher. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughters and sons-in-law, Leslie and Bob Riley, Laurie and Joe Hickey, and Jeannie and Richard Everett; and grandchildren, Kristen and Brandon Hickey and Jamie Everett. Her thoughtful kind ways will be missed by those who knew and loved her; particularly her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Marg Trotman. She will also be kindly remembered by her in-laws, Brian Targett, Doreen Sangster, and Lynne Sangster; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gert had wonderful memories of family and friends growing up in Medicine Hat, AB. As a young woman, she was the first grade teacher that everyone fondly remembered and one of the last one-room school teachers in Alberta. Later, she met her loving husband Ken. Military service found them moving around the country while raising three daughters. She embodied love, independence, strength, tenacity and loyalty – what wonderful gifts to give to her daughters. Gert was always the consummate hostess, making all who met her feel welcome in her company; although her first priority was always her family. She and Ken had wonderful trips across Canada, Europe, but the trips she loved most were; visiting Laurie and family in P.E.I, or Leslie and Bob in Florida. She was a dedicated Grandma; no occasion was too small to send a little gift or card of love. The grandkids will remember spending special time making toffee drop cookies, eating grandma’s apple pie, making grandma sandwiches, going on picnics, playing card games and going shopping. We were blessed to have Gert hold our hands for so many impressionable years. We have wonderful memories to hold in our hearts forever. Funeral Services will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Drive S.W.) on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Peter Coutts Presider.
