Obituary of Maureen Elizabeth McHenry

Vincent and Thomas Apperley wish to advise her friends that Maureen, our loving wife and mother, passed away at home on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 following a five-year struggle with cancer. Maureen was born in Edmonton on May 17, 1959. She leaves us just short of her 47th birthday. A graduate of William Aberhart and the University of Calgary, her qualifications and interests led her to the High Arctic. Working for Dome Petroleum, she studied ice flow pressures exerted by the Beaufort Sea on the drill ship. Whenever she ventured out on the ice she was accompanied by a gun toting Inuit with a keen eye for marauding polar bears. This led to a career of accomplishments in the oil and gas industry with Amoco, Wascana and Nexen. Maureen loved the outdoors. On most weekends, Maureen could be found exploring those hiking trails, for which the Rockies and Kananaskis are renowned, or chasing down Thomas on the cross-country ski-trails. A self-confessed knitting addict, she made many close friendships and found great support in the Gillie-Hook Heritage Knitting Guild. Through her friends at the Guild, she became an accomplished knitter creating many beautiful award-winning items. With an enquiring mind, she became an avid genealogical researcher into her Irish heritage, and put together a family tree that stretched back many generations and around the globe. Unusually caring and empathetic on an intimate basis, her cutting humour and feisty intellect will be sorely missed at family gatherings by her parents, Fred and Kathleen McHenry; sister Helen Glish (Greg) of Kentucky; brother Michael McHenry of Calgary; and sister Lynda McHenry of Edmonton; also nieces and nephew Leah, Sara, Lana, Samantha and Tyler, with all of whom she developed a special relationship. In keeping with Maureen’s express wishes, a formal ceremony will not be conducted. However, friends and relatives are invited to an informal reception (an Irish wake in the making) at the Calgary Winter Club on Friday, May 12 from 2:00 to 3:30 pm.
