Obituary of Kathleen Ekin Popowezki

Kathleen Popowezki of Calgary, formerly of Onoway, passed away peacefully at the Rockyview General Hospital on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at the age of 91 years. Kathleen was born on June 27, 1914 in Amsterdam, Holland where she stayed until both her and her family moved to Brighton, England in 1932. In 1946 Kathleen met and married Joseph Popowezki, who was serving in the Canadian Army at the time. Kathleen, a war-bride, came to Canada to begin farming with her husband in the area of Onoway. It was here where she, Joe and their son, Michael happily resided. Kathleen and Joe successfully farmed for thirty-five years, these years were very hard, but happy and healthy none the less. Kathleen and Joe gave up the farm life in 1986 and moved to Calgary for health reasons and to be closer their son, Michael and his family. Kathleen was a loving and devoted family person and had a special appreciation for nature, animals and gardening. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Kathleen is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Christine Popowezki, of Calgary; her grandchildren, Devin and Amanda Popowezki, of Calgary; her sister-in-law Martha Popwiecki; and by her niece Victoria Farnalls of Sidney, B.C. Kathleen was predeceased by her loving husband, Joseph, of forty-two years in 1992; her brother Gerald in 1918; her father William Whann in 1959; and by her mother Helena Whann (Dunn) in 1964. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Monday, May 8, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at a later date at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens.
