Obituary of John Alexander Middleton

On Monday, May 1, 2006, John A. Middleton, Q.C. passed away at the Foothills Medical Centre with his loving wife Cara by his side. John was a devoted husband, proud father, loyal friend, and a distinguished trial lawyer. John was born May 4, 1963, and raised in Edmonton, AB. After graduating from Strathcona Composite High School, he completed two years of undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta. John graduated with his law degree from the University of Ottawa in 1986. He articled in Edmonton and was admitted to the Bar in 1987. In Calgary, he joined the firm Cook Duke Cox (later Miller Thomson LLP) in 1990. An accomplished litigator, John was admitted to the partnership at Miller Thomson LLP in 1993 and appointed Queen’s Council (QC) in 2004. John’s passions and accomplishments were varied – politics, an avid hockey and baseball fan, a skilled poker player, and car collector. John owned three Thunderbirds – 1965, 1967 and 2002 models. On most weekends, John would enjoy meticulously polishing of one of his cars and ‘cruising with the top down’. John’s true loves were his wife and three young sons. He will be lovingly and forever remembered by his wife Cara; his three precious boys, Matthew (7), John Thomas (4) and Brandon (18 months); mother Elizabeth Middleton; brother Murray Middleton; nephew Alex Middleton; mother-in-law Jean Grossell; and brother-in-law Gil Grossell (Marlene). John was predeceased by his father Cyril Middleton in 1999; and father-in-law George Grossell in 1987.
