Obituary of George Lyndon Crawford

George Lyndon Crawford, beloved husband of Sheila Crawford of Calgary, passed away peacefully in San Francisco on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at the age of 90 years. He was about to embark on a ten day cruise with Sheila. George was born on July 17, 1915 in Edmonton, AB. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1938. His sixty-year law practice began with Milner Steer in Edmonton, defending a local farmer accused of operating an illegal still. In WWII, he served as a lieutenant in the Navy. In 1945 he joined Eric Harvie and Ted Arnold as a partner, and in 2000 his law career ended when he retired from Parlee McLaws. He served on several boards, including: Southam Inc., Selkirk Communications Ltd., Canadian Utilities Ltd. and the Nature Conservancy of Canada. He was a past president of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, YMCA, Canadian Badminton Association, Alberta Light Horse Association and the Sir Winston Churchill Society. He was also a past chairman of Woods Christian Home, Heritage Park and was a fellow of the Glenbow Museum. An avid outdoorsman, George was happiest hunting ducks or pheasant with his Labrador retrievers. He supported preservation of wildlife habitat and was instrumental in the founding of the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area. Besides his loving wife Sheila, George is survived by his four daughters and one son-in-law: Anne Crawford, Sally Gross, Erica and Marc Galeski, all of Calgary; and Eve Crawford of Toronto; seven grandchildren; Ragnar Saether (Dana Antal), Kate Saether (Leon Pigott), Kevin (Natalie) Gross, Patrick and Sarah Galeski, and Duncan and Spencer Macnaughton. George is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Tyson and Nolan Gross, and Lukas Pigott.
