Obituary of Roy Style Pinder

Roy Pinder, beloved husband of Helen, passed away at home on Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at the age of 85 years. Roy was born in Edmonton, AB, on March 11, 1921. His father was a United Church Minister, and the Pinders lived in Edmonton, Crowsnest Pass, Calgary, Nanton, and Stettler. Roy took most of his schooling in Nanton and always considered it his home town. Roy joined the RCAF early in World War II, and trained as a Wireless Air Gunner. While he was in the service, his parents and siblings moved to Stettler, and that was where Roy met Helen Kennedy. They were married on May 5, 1944, and went to Grace Bay, NS where Roy was stationed. A few months later, Roy was transferred to Gander, NL, and Helen returned to Stettler. After the war, Roy attended the University of Alberta and graduated with his B.Sc. in Agriculture. He joined the Shur-Gain Division of Canada Packers and remained with the company all of his working life. He worked in Edmonton, Innisfail, and finally in Calgary. After he retired, he volunteered with the Calgary Stampede Board and Fort Calgary; and he became involved with the Calgary Winter Olympics, doing school presentations for three years prior to the Olympics, then joining the Transportation Committee for the actual games. Roy was a avid golfer and curler and enjoyed the company of many good friends on the golf course and at the rink. Roy will be forever remembered and loved by his wife of sixty-one years, Helen; his sons and daughter, Scott (Michelle), Blair (Lynn), Cheryl (Bill) and Neil (Joanne); his grandchildren, Ryan (Trish), Michael (Irisz), Stephen (Leslie), Melissa, Claire, Sylvie, Katherine, and Anne; his great-grandchildren, Taylor, Zachary, Rayden, and Will. Roy is also survived by his sister Jean; his brother Blair (Eileen); sister-in-law Lenore; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Roy was predeceased by his parents The Reverend Charles S. Pinder and Phyllis Pinder, his brother Jack, and his brother-in-law Don McDavid. At Roy’s request a Celebration of his life for family and friends will take place in the near future.
