Obituary of David Penner

David “Edwin” Penner of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2006 at the age of 87 years. Our beloved father Edwin was born on December 3, 1918 in Saskatoon SK, to Peter and Mary Penner. His parents farmed near Saskatoon for many years, which is also where Edwin grew up and attended school. He was faithful, and also enjoyed helping his parents with the farm work. In his late teens, Edwin would get occasional work away from home, which added to his supply of spending money. He attended a series of evangelical meetings in Warman, SK, sparking an interest within him. This interest led him and a small number of his friends to organize a musical group. In 1940 Edwin attended First Mennonite Church baptismal classes, and was later baptized upon confession of his faith in the Lord as his Saviour. One of Edwin’s favourite verses of scripture was John 14:1 to 6. Later in the same year, he met Nettie Balzer, a pretty girl with whom he fell in love with. A year later, Edwin and Nettie decided to get married and build a home of their own. To this marriage union were born Verna in 1942, Arnold in 1943, and Gary in 1950. Edwin leaves behind his daughter Verna of Lethbridge; sons Arnold of Irricana and Gary and daughter-in-law Lee of High River; four grandchildren, Tony, Darcy, Grant, and Blair; five great-grandchildren, Amanda, Jullian, Alexander, Justin and Riley. He is also survived by three sisters, Linda of Calgary and Anne and Lorene of Saskatoon; and step mother Helen Penner of Saskatoon. Edwin was predeceased by his wife Nettie in 1995; mother Mary in 1956; father Peter in 1984; and brother Art in 1993. He was blessed with an active, healthy life and was well thought of by all who knew him. He will be missed greatly, by his family and friends. Yet in spite of the sorrow at the passing of our father, we do not sorrow as those who have no hope, but rejoice in the prospect of being united with him in the Glory. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Monday, March 6, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.
