Obituary of Anne Barry

Anne Barry (nee Winiarski, Grochmal) of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 30, 2005 at the age of 96 years. Anne was born in Krakow, AB and was one of nine children. She married Stanley Grochmal on November 30, 1927 and began her life as a loving, loyal wife and mother. Anne maintained flourishing flower, vegetable and fruit gardens that were the envy of many. An accomplished cook, Anne often created culinary masterpieces with no recipes to guide her. Anne was a life long member of the Catholic Church, including over forty years spent as a faithful parishioner of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She was also honoured to be a member of the Catholic Women’s League for many years. Anne devoted herself to enriching the lives of those around her, and those she did not know. A selfless humanitarian, Anne generously gave to others, including sponsoring numerous foster children from foreign countries, financially assisting Seminarians to enter the priesthood, assisting Catholic charities overseas, giving to Canadian men serving in World War II, and many other charitable acts. After Stan’s untimely passing, Anne demonstrated great courage and strength. During this time, Anne began to travel and found it to be one of her true passions. Her adventures were extensive, taking her to all “corners” of the globe. This love of travel was something she shared with her second husband, Thomas Barry, whom she married on December 7, 1982. Together they spent the last years of their lives filled with love and happiness. Family and friends were blessed for having known Anne and will greatly miss her zest of life. Anne will be lovingly remembered and cherished by her children Emily Worrell, Grace (Steve) Matlo, Bob (Marilyn) Grochmal, Ed (Jenny) Grochmal, and Mary (Bryan) Hughes; her many grandchildren; her great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. Anne was predeceased by her parents, Alex and Antonia; her husbands, Stanley Grochmal and Thomas Barry; her sisters, Katherine, Helen, Carol, Vickie, Mary, and Kay; and her brothers John and Walter.
