Obituary of Gerry Margetts
It is with deepest sorrow we announce the passing of a wonderful Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa and friend. Gerry passed away peacefully on January 17th, 2006 at the age of 82 years.
Dad was born January 1, 1924 in Calgary, Alberta to Anna and Thomas Margetts and was the youngest of two children. Gerry grew up in Brant, Alberta. He met the love of his life, Elizabeth (Bette) Ross during their wartime training and they married on October 25, 1947 and happily settled into raising their family. He was the founder and owner of Aero Plumbers from 1958 until 1972, when he sold the business to his son, Nels, and set out on other endeavors; Arrow Excavating and Trenching; Margetts Contracting and GRM Contracting. He retired in 1984 to care for Bette during the last months of her life. From 1986 until 1989 he was a commissionaire at the U of C at which time he re-retired and spent many a happy hour in his beautiful garden and walking one of his much loved dogs. Dad/Grandpa will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his children; sons Frank (Deanna); Nels (Jerrilyn); Vic (Lynne) and Glenn (Mary); and by his daughter Marge (Peter) Kenney. Grandpa will also be dearly missed by his ten grandchildren, Shaun (Penny); Marla (Colin); Matt (Trinatie), Geri-Lynne (Ryan), Heather, Lindsay; Dayna (Mike), Tannis; Scott and Nic; and his eight great-grandchidlren, MacKenzie, Griffyn, Cicelly; Austen, Maverick, Grace; Ethan and Elisabeth; with two more arriving in April. Gerry is also survived by his lifelong friend and long time companion, Dorothy Fox. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Bette in 1984; his granddaughter Cathy (Cat) Margetts in 2004; great-grandson Solomon Margetts; his parents and brother Vic in 1953.
Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, January 20, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. Private Family Graveside Service to follow in the Field of Honour at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
