Obituary of Mary Kootenay

Mary was born on December 3, 1912. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, January 9 2006 at the age of 93 years. Mary came from a long line of hereditary Chiefs, she was the daughter of the late Chief Walking Buffalo and Flora McLean who was the daughter of the late Chief Hector Crawler. She was also the granddaughter of Chief John Chiniki, who was the original signer of Treaty Number Seven and was the fourth generation of Chief Red Cloud of the Great Sioux Nation. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, , Kathleen (Paul) Poucette, Viola, Clarice Kootenay and Gerald Kootenay; special niece and friend Reba Powderface and Doreen Kootenay; son-in-law Lawrence Crawler; daughters-in-law Irene Fox and Margaret Dixon; adopted children whom she loved dearly; Beverly Dave) Tailfeathers, Gladys (Ted) Kyme, Patsy (Jerry) Simon; and son Wayne (Bev) Hill; thirty-five grandchildren, ninety-three great grandchildren and twenty-eight great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Bill Mclean, niece Doris (Billy) Dixon, nephew Dave (Lorne) Bearspaw, Lawrence (Lorianne) Dixon; and numerous extended families of the Kaquitts, Crawler, Abraham, Beaver, Dixon, Bearspaw, Powderface, Wildman, Poucettes, Labelle, Benjamins, Chiniquay, Mark, Twoyoungmen, Simeon, Daniels, Lefthand, and Holloway, also from other First Nation Reserves of Alexis, Hobbema, Kainai and Tsuu T’ina. Mary was predeceased by her loving husband Joseph W. Kootenay; daughters, Shirley Crawler, Rachel Kootenay, Cecilia Kootenay, Valda Poucette; and son Ralph Kootenay; and two sisters, Elizabeth Bearspaw and Florence Dixon; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; The family would like to thank Dr. Bryson and the nursing staff of the Canmore Hospital and the Adult Care Staff of the Morley Health Centre. The family sincerely apologizes for anyone that has been missed. Wake Services will be held at the residence of Mary Kootenay (Morley, AB) Friday, January 13, 2006. Funeral Service will be held at the Morley Gymnasium (Morley, AB) on Saturday, January 14, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Bearspaw Cemetery.
