Obituary of Gertrude Mary Laing

Gertrude Mary Laing of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at the age of 100 years. She had a long and interesting career in public service. Gertrude taught French at the university of Manitoba and held various positions with the Winnipeg YMCA and the Central Volunteer Bureau. She became the only woman member on the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism (a seven year task). Gertrude simultaneously served as a member of the Canadian Radio and Television Commission, as delegate to the Unesco General Assembly, and as Western Regional Vice-President of the Canadian Welfare Council. Her lifelong interest in cultural matters was realized by the appointment as chairman of the Canada Council. She reaped a collection of honours and medals, including appointment as Officer to the Order of Canada. She is survived by two sons, Colin and Alan; Colin’s wife Joan; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her beloved husband Stanley predeceased her in 1989.
