Obituary of Myfanwy Joan Griffiths

With great sadness, the family of Myfanwy Griffiths announces her passing on December 15, 2005 at the Sarcee Hospice, Calgary after a short illness. Myfanwy was born March 20th, 1922 in Oyen, Alberta, the first child of Kathleen and Morgan “Tiny” Holden. She grew up in the Red Deer Lake area just south of Calgary, attending school at Alexander and Dewinton, leaving home to serve in the RCAF from 1942 to 1944. After she and fellow RCAF serviceman Stanley Griffiths married in 1944, they worked, raised three children and were active community members in Grande Prairie, Alberta until 1980 when they moved to Creston, B.C. She continued her involvement in the Legion, horse shows and the Creston Food Bank. In 2002 Myfanwy returned to live in the Red Deer Lake district, and the family farm she grew up on. Known as “Mrs G” to her many friends, Myfanwy had a lifelong passion for horses and was active in the horse community, showing her horses throughout Alberta, BC and Idaho. She was instrumental in forming the Therapeutic Riding Program in Creston, and participated in Golden Age Heritage Horse Shows in southern Alberta from 1982 to 2001. She was well loved not only for her great sense of humour and horsemanship but also for her independence and preparedness, often lending a piece of equipment and a helpful hand to fellow competitors. Another of Myfanwy’s pleasures later in life was travel, having crossed Canada by train, toured Australia by coach, and taken many cruises with family members. Myfanwy is survived by her three children: Fred & daughter-in-law Wendy Griffiths of Calgary, Kathlene Griffiths and son-in-law Juergen Seeliger of Enderby, BC and Arlene Garcia of Lac LaBiche, Alberta. She also leaves grandaughters Nolene (Graham) Dunlop of Calgary, Deanna (Paul) Didyk of Bermuda, Erin Hay of Grande Prairie, Colleen Hay of Nanaimo, and Elizabeth Garcia of Lac La Biche, and one great grandson J.P. Didyk. Myfanwy is also mourned by her brothers Desmond and Arthur Holden and sister Beatrice Holden all of Calgary area, as well as nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by beloved husband Stanley in 1987, grandson Andrew in 1991 and son-in-law Lyell Hay in 1993. A celebration of Myfanwy Griffiths’ life will be held at Red Deer Lake United Church on Tuesday, December 20th at 2 pm with Reverend Bruce Sheasby officiating.
