Obituary of Peter Metcalfe

It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved father, brother and colleague, Det. Peter Metcalfe, after a heroic and determined battle against lung cancer. Unfortunately, the cancer won the battle on Thursday, December 15, 2005 at the age of 51 years, and Peter slipped away in his sleep at 8:10 a.m. Peter was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England on April 4, 1954, the youngest of six children born to Jack and Louise Metcalfe. After a childhood filled with escapades, Peter completed his education at St. Cuthberts Grammar School, went on to Kings College and became an accomplished chef. After the wonderful experience of working aboard the ocean liner QEII, Peter married his sweetheart, Ruth. Together they embarked upon a new life in Canada. After a short time in Calgary, Peter proudly joined the Calgary Police Service. His wacky sense of humour and his extraordinary decency and kindness made him an outstanding member of the force, and he made numerous lifelong friends among his colleagues. The high point of his life was the birth of his beloved son, David. Even though their marriage ended, raising David was Peter and Ruth’s main focus through the next twenty years, and Peter proved to be a superb father and friend. Since his diagnosis with cancer three years ago, Peter received overwhelming support from his friends in various police departments, and could not have fought it so long without the “four musketeers” Maureen, Lionel, Ralph and Lorne. Your strong friendship was treasured by Peter. Peter is survived by his only son David (Rachel) and Jayden; sister Valerie (Dan) Larson; brothers Jim (Ida) of Victoria, BC, John (Julie) and Norman (Brenda) in England. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces, and was dearly loved and respected by all. The world will be a sadder place without Uncle Peter. Peter was predeceased by his parents; and brother David. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate and honour Peter’s life at Bethany Chapel (3333 Richardson Way S.W.) on Wednesday, December 21 at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Preston Busch presiding, followed by private family cremation. Peter faced his illness head on, with a determination and sense of humour that astounded everyone who knew him. See you later, Paco!
