Obituary of Nellie Louise Day
Nellie Louise (nee Woodham) Day of Calgary, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2005 at the age of 108 years.
Nellie Louise “Woolley” was born in Sunninghill, Berkshire, England on December 6, 1897. In 1913, she began her nursing career obtaining her Central Midwife Board certificate in 1921. In 1928, she joined the Lady Minto Nursing Service and travelled to India to work as a midwife. In 1931, she met and married her husband, an engineer working for Burmah Oil Company, in Rangoon, Burma. They established their home in Mazimpur, India and later in Chauk, Burma. Nellie returned with the children to England just before World War 11 was declared. In 1941, she rejoined her husband in Burma but immediately had to escape the Japanese invasion. After the war, Nellie and Sandy returned to England. In 1950, they moved to Canada and lived in Calgary where Sandy worked for various oil companies until his passing in 1988. Nellie moved to Carroll Place where she lived independently with care from Dr. M. Addison as well as many loyal and attentive family members, friends and residents. In August 2005, Nellie became a resident of Bow View Manor where she received compassionate and loving care from the staff.
Left with loving memories to treasure, are her three sons, Ian (Micheline); Alastair (Helen) and Donald (Sylvette). Her grandchildren Bradley (Noreen), Heather, Glenn, Susan, Steven (Lori), Wendy, Joyce (Robert) Willows, Todd, Kathy (Bradley) Ball and Scott. Her great grandchildren, Rebecca, Jared, Kylie, Danica Milord, Alexander, Hannah, Jessica, Kyra, Hailey, Kallie and Sydney. Michael, Melanie and Nicole Gesy as well as her nieces, nephews and her dear friends in Canada, England, Scotland and New Zealand, will also fondly remember Nellie. Nellie was predeceased by her husband Alexander McLeod “Sandy” Day, parents Thomas and Ellen Woodham, brothers Thomas and Edward, sister Winnifred, daughter-in-law Mary (Czerkas) Day.
