Obituary of Georgina May Eileen Potts

Georgina May Eileen of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2005 at the age of 84 years. Georgina was a proud mother of three children, son Frank (Les) Potts and daughters Judy Bell and Nancy (Doug) Hein, loving grandmother of Frank, Jeff, Chris, Corey (Michelle) and Jen, and step grandson Jonathon, and doting great-grandmother of Kylie and Cassidy. Predeceased by eight of her much loved siblings and survived by brothers Norman (Bernice) Kadey and Mel Kadey, and sister Marlene Wrightson. Eldest of 12 siblings, Georgina was born and raised in Calgary. From the time she was a child, nothing ever mattered more to her than family. She asked little of them, but for every day of her life gave to each generously of her time and affection. As a young girl, she worked full time helping to raise her brothers and sisters. As a young woman, she married and devoted herself to raising Frank and Judy while her husband soldiered and went off to war. After his return from Korea, Nancy was born and Georgina, while putting the children’s needs first, helped run the family business. As a senior, she maintained a keen interest in her siblings, children and grandchildren, and was always very proud of their accomplishments. Georgina loved to travel and could be found visiting Nashville to hear her favourite artists, travelling to Palm Springs to see the haunts and homes of the movie stars she so enjoyed, and wintertimes, visiting Vancouver or anywhere else without snow. She spent her leisure time, beloved daughter Judy always at her side, frequenting various bingo halls, casinos and race tracks from Calgary to Regina to Reno and other points south. When from time to time lady luck deserted her, she enjoyed playing hearts and rummy with the grandchildren or going to bingo at the lodge. She loved the music and movies of her youth, and acquired an enviable collection of all the standards she loved to watch and hear. She never tired of playing them, and, after a while, but not without complaint, the grandchildren got used to it. She read voraciously, spoke her mind if she could do so without giving too much offence, and was no stranger to call in radio programs and elected representatives. Georgina was a genuine, caring person and a true Albertan who, provided that you weren’t an eastern politician, was always willing to give you the benefit of a doubt. She loved Calgary and the Flames in equal measure, but never really got over the loss of Dougie Gilmore. Like all sensible Calgarians, she hated winter, but unlike most, simply would not listen to any talk about moving to more hospitable climes. She always had a positive attitude about life and until her final day, did her best to help others deal with life’s vicissitudes. Georgina was not one to create “a fuss” about anything in life and had no wish to create one in death. In accord with her wishes, but very reluctantly, no service will be held. For those so inclined, Mom has asked, in lieu of flowers, that an extra bingo card or scratch and win or lotto be purchased. Failing that, Mom said a charitable donation will do. Her death is a real loss, not just to family, but to all who knew her. She will be, very much, missed and mourned for.
