Obituary of Vera May Ferguson

Vera May Ferguson (nee Sumner) of Calgary passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 6, 2005 at the age of 87 years. Vera was born on December 4, 1917 in Calgary, AB. She attended Stanley Jones School, Crescent Heights and Alberta Normal School. She taught for several years in the Cluny, Hussar, and Gleichen districts before joining the Calgary Board of Education. She taught Special Education for many years and then became the principal of McDougall Elementary School and later Vista Heights Elementary. In 1965, Vera became supervisor of Special Education for the Calgary Board of Education, where she served until her retirement in 1982. Vera loved to curl, golf, travel and paint, as well as many other activities. In recent years she was still active with her “Go Getters” Tai Chi classes at West Hillhurst Community Association. Vera will be especially remembered for her love of people and all the friendships which she made and maintained over the years. Vera will be sadly missed by her very good friend, Marilyn Mac McElheran; her sister-in-law Eileen Sumner, of Calgary; her nieces and nephews, Lorraine Heming, Jim and Sarah Sumner, all of Calgary, Janice Sumner, of Strathmore, Neil Hockley of Columbia, MO, and Diane Fletcher of Quesnel, BC; as well as many dear friends and extended family. Vera was predeceased by her brother Jack in 1980, and by her sister Mary in 2001.
