Obituary of James Donald Weir

James Donald (Don) Weir of Calgary passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2005 at the age of 90 years. Don was born in Saskatoon, SK on December 19, 1914. He obtained his BSc. in Geology at the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon). He was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship and attended Oxford University in England where he received a PhD in Geology. He also attended Harvard University. Don worked with the Geological Survey as a student and also taught Geology at the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon). He worked for thirty-seven years at Chevron. There, he became V.P. of exploration in Canada. From 1963, he was Chief Geologist in San Francisco for Standard Oil of California (Chevron Corp). An expert in Western Canadian history, Don was a “birder”, as well as a stamp collector and an avid traveller. Don is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Jan Weir and Jacques Gendron, currently residing in Yemen; son and daughter-in-law Jace and Lucy of Calgary; and two grandchildren, Angela and Carly. He is also survived by a sister Phyllis McNally of Hamilton, ON; and his special friend Polly Aird of Seattle, WA. Don was predeceased by his wife Marje in 1996; and his brother Jack Weir. Funeral Services will be held at St. Matthew’s United Church (2039 – 26A Street S.W.) on Thursday, December 1, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Clinton M. Mooney, Presider.
