Obituary of Maddalena Felice Barbuto

It is with great sadness that the family of Maddalena Barbuto announce her passing. She passed away at home on Wednesday, October 12, 2005, surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 96 years. Maddalena was born on October 1, 1909 in S. Martino di Finita, Cosenza, Italy. She married Bruno Barbuto on December 29, 1935. She immigrated with her children to Canada in December of 1957 to join her husband. They continued their life together in Calgary until his death in February 1975. Maddalena was an unbelievably strong woman who was always ready to show love and compassion. She will be remembered for her intense faith and spirituality, generosity of spirit and hospitality. Her home was a welcoming place for family, friends and many new immigrants, especially in the early years. Her sense of humour and loving nature endeared her to all those who had the privilege of meeting her. Maddalena is survived by her sister Letizia Santoro and family of Milan, Italy as well as her four children and their spouses, Maria and Vincenzo Sacco, Dorina and Pietro Zappa, Frances and Tony Casello, and Aldo Barbuto. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren and their families, Johanna and Renato Cussigh (Marco), Bruno and Ann Sacco (Meagan and Matthew), Claudio and Anne Sacco (Claudia and Emma), Sara and Len Bates (Ariel and Jarod), Victor and Franca Zappa (Nicholas and Angela), Sandra and Ken Huyghe (Evan, Luke and Curtis), Adriana and Pat Martin (Gabrielle and Carter), Pia Casello (Jordan) and Diane Casello. Maddalena was predeceased by her husband Bruno; infant son Saverio; great-granddaughter RenÚe Cussigh; and many special friends along the way. “As we loved you so we miss you. In our memory you are near. Loved, remembered, loved for always.” Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church (321 – 90th Avenue S.E.) on Monday, October 17, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev.
