Obituary of Tom Lothian

Thomas (Tom) Mackenzie Lothian passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2005 at the age of 92 years. Tom passed away suddenly from old age after a wonderful ninety-two years. He was predeceased a year and a half ago, by Peg, his wife and best friend for over fifty-five years. He is survived by his daughter Christine Mearns (Wayne), and son Don Lothian (Leslie), as well as five grandchildren Gerad, Heath, Holt, Dini, and Caitlin. Tom was born in Lacombe, Alberta but moved east with the family to Ontario when he was a teenager. Tom and Peg raised the family in a place where dreams are made of – Prince Edward Island. After taking early retirement from his position of Dean of Freshmen at the University of Prince Edward Island, they travelled extensively around North America settling in Canmore, AB to be close to their children who were both in Calgary. A very intelligent, educated man with artistic flare, Tom was proud of having helped many special friends and students along their way to their life ambitions. Tom and Peg have numerous paintings hanging on family member walls. A man with nine lives, he survived bouts with cancer over thirty years, heart attacks, a triple bypass at eighty-two and more to be able to die peacefully of old age with-in days of his last weekly trip out for a piece of pie and a glass of wine. Tom’s favourite place for the last couple of years was the H.Q. Pie Emporium in Cochrane (he loved his pie and most anything sweet). Therefore, in lieu of a formal service (at his request) there will be A Celebration of his life at the H.Q. at 216 – 1st Street, Cochrane, AB, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2005. Anyone interested in saying goodbye is welcome to drop in for a piece of pie, a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Those far away can simply stop at the nearest pie shop. Your thoughts and wishes will be felt and appreciated. In lieu of flowers, anyone who wishes is encouraged to make a donation to a Hurricane Relief Fund of their choice.
