Obituary of Erla Bernice Hingston
Erla Bernice Hingston (nee Popplewell) of Calgary passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at the age of 86 years.
Erla was born in Saskatoon and raised in Dinsmore, SK. When she was eighteen, she moved to Hanley, SK to work in her grandfather’s Red & White store. While pursuing her musical career, she met Bob Hingston to whom she was married for fifty-four years. Erla was an accomplished singer and pianist, and in 1942 appeared at the Palace Theatre in Calgary with the group “Eight Notes of Melody”.
Erla will be dearly missed by her sister Joy Popplewell; her two daughters and son-in-law, Corinne Hingston, and Brenda and Dave Scruton; her son and daughter-in-law Roy and Barbara Hingston; and especially by her four grandchildren, Linda and Peter McLaughlin, and Rob and Brian Hingston; as well as her stepgrandchildren, Adam and Lisa Scruton. Erla was predeceased by her husband, Robert (Bob) Hingston; her brother Chetwin (Chet) Popplewell; and her sisters, Avis Mitchell and May Popplewell.
A Celebration of Erla’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the Palliative Care staff, especially Chantal, for the care, compassion and support that Erla received during her last days.
