Obituary of Shirley Johnston

Shirley “Jean” Johnston of Calgary passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2005 at the age of 80 years. Jean leaves to mourn her husband John of Calgary; four sons, Damon (Michele Moss) and Desmond (Karen Davis), all of Calgary, Stephen (Kim) of Black Diamond, AB, and Adrian (Jo Ann Walker) of Saskatoon, SK; and four grandchildren, Odessa, Shea, John and Milo. She is also survived by her brother Jack (Mary) Cardiff of Kelowna, BC. Jean was predeceased by her daughter Jennifer (Edward Mitchell) of Edmonton in 2002; and her parents Harvey and Wilena Cardiff. Jean was born in Govan, SK where she grew up on the family farm. After high school, she attended Normal School in Regina and taught for a short time. She moved to Victoria and trained as a Registered Nurse at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Following graduation, she took a diploma in Pediatric nursing at the Children’s Hospital in Montreal. Jean married John Johnston in March of 1953 in Regina and they spent the next forty-three years in Prince Albert, SK before moving to Calgary for retirement. Jean was very active in volunteer service, serving on the Prince Albert Public School Board as a member and Chair, and for the local Red Cross. Her support and dedication to the Red Cross involved activities at the local and provincial level, serving one year as the President of Red Cross in the province and was awarded the Order of Red Cross. She was also an active member of the First Baptist Church in Prince Albert. Jean assisted with the sponsoring of Vietnamese immigrants. She was a loving parent to her children and a dedicated friend to many.
