Obituary of Mary Rutherford

Gladys Rutherford passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 in Calgary. Gladys’ husband John (Jack) Bow Rutherford predeceased her in 1968 as did her granddaughter Barbara (Rutherford) R÷thlisberger, in 1997. She is survived by her son John, and his wife Huguette; as well as her daughter Dorothy and her husband John Russell. She has four grandchildren, Michael (and wife Rose) Rutherford and Peter (and wife Charlotte) Russell, Deanna Russell and Timothy Russell. She also has four great-grandchildren: Barbara’s daughter, ZoÚ R÷thlisberger, Sophia and Sean Rutherford (children of Michael and Rose), and Timothy’s son Christopher. Gladys was extremely proud to be a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan and instilled in her children the importance of education. Accordingly, she greatly enjoyed her work at the Canadian Teachers’ Federation where she established an overseas exchange program for Canadian teachers, concentrating on underdeveloped countries in Africa and the Caribbean. After retirement, she worked part-time at the Overseas Book Centre, where she continued to promote education in underdeveloped countries through the donation of used textbooks. Gladys traveled extensively, both with her husband and children, and on her own after her husband died, visiting every continent more than once. She also loved driving and drove from Ontario to Florida in the fall returning in the spring by herself, many times over fifteen years or more. Gladys had a wonderful sense of humour and enjoyed staying abreast of current events and politics all her life. She was a keen bridge player and was happy to have a good serious game at any time. As a young girl, she played tennis and keenly followed the professional players in her retirement years.
