Obituary of James Roderick Ferguson

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Roderick Ferguson, Q.C. on Thursday, September 1, 2005 at the age of 51 years. He was affectionately known as “Ferg” to all his friends and family, but especially to his cherished wife, Barb. Predeceased by his mother Jane, Ferg was the eldest child of Kenneth Ferguson; brother to Stewart (Randi), Debbie (Pat), and Ken (Lori); and uncle to Kenzie, Ellian, Janet, Patrick, Emma, William and Matthew. He was welcomed as a third son by Hugh and Betty Levy when he married Barb. Ferg was born in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on June 9, 1954. He received his B. Comm. (1975) and his LL.B. (1978) both from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Ferg moved to Calgary after graduation to begin his legal career. He practised at Gowlings (formerly Code Hunter) for most of his career. Ferg was an excellent barrister who conducted his practice honourably and with the utmost integrity. In life, as in law, he was highly respected as a wonderful person, and greatly admired for his wisdom, kindness, generosity, and decency. In recognition of these attributes and his contribution to his profession, Ferg was appointed as Queen’s Counsel. He had a great passion for sports, but hockey was always his favourite. Ferg was also an avid history buff and never saw a museum he could pass by. During his illness, Ferg’s perspective on life never waivered; he remained steadfast, without a complaint, and always maintained his great sense of humour. Ferg’s incredible friends and his cats were a constant source of comfort. The family extends its deepest appreciation to the many friends, neighbours, partners, colleagues, and medical staff, who provided care, assistance, support, and meals during this very trying time. A funeral service was held at the Black River United Church, Cape Breton, on Friday, September 9, 2005. A Celebration of Ferg’s Life will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. at the Red & White Club, 1833 Crowchild Trail N.W. (North end of McMahon Stadium).
