Obituary of Doug Carlyle

Phillip Douglas (Doug) Carlyle of Calgary passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at the age of 82 years. Doug was born August 16, 1923 in Lethbridge, Alberta. As a child Doug grew up on the family ranch in Monarch and in the Crowsnest Pass. On June 23, 1940, at the age of 16 Doug joined the army and served in Canada, England and Europe during WW II. He was part of the first wave of Royal Winnipeg Rifles soldiers to go ashore during the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944, and fought in numerous battles in France and Belgium. On October 12, 1944 he was seriously wounded and spent the rest of the war in hospital. He returned to Canada on December 23, 1945 and eventually settled in Medicine Hat to attend schooling through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Doug met Martha Hoffman in Medicine Hat and they were married on May 24, 1947. Doug & Martha soon moved to Lethbridge where he was employed with AGT. In his 32 years with AGT they lived in Vegreville, St. Albert and Calgary as Doug worked his way up to Engineering Manager. After a stroke in 1977 Doug retired in Calgary. In 1980 Doug & Martha moved to Ainsworth, BC, building their retirement log home and where they, their children and grand-children enjoyed summers on Kootenay Lake. In retirement Doug was active in the Woodbury Village Society and the Kaslo Legion, as well as fishing and travelling the backroads of the Kootenay Lake valley. In 1994 Doug returned to Europe to participate in the 50th Anniversary of the Normandy Invasion. Besides his loving wife Martha, Doug is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Terry and Dawne Carlyle, his daughter and son-in-law Leslie Carlyle-Ebert and Jim Ebert; grandchildren Geoff and Mary-Lou Carlyle, Cameron and Carolyn Carlyle all of Edmonton, Kristy Carlyle and Sean Ebert, both of Calgary; and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law Bill and Kathy Carlyle of Medicine Hat, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two daughters, Beverly Ann in 1968 and Sherry-Lyn in 1956, and two brothers.
