Obituary of Flora Hanna Ethel McDade
Flora Hanna Ethel McDade (nee Howey), beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on the evening of August 16, 2005 at the Bethany Care Centre in Calgary, just eight days following her eighty-third birthday. Flora has gone to be with her beloved Peter who predeceased her July 25, 1986.
Flora is lovingly remembered by her daughter Sharron Wright-Fulton (David), her grandson Keir Wright, granddaughter Karas Wright (Tony Griggs) and great-grandchildren Trinity and Taylor Wright-Griggs.
Born in Tuxford, SK, Flora spent her early years on the family farm near Mossbank, SK. Flora attended elementary school in Moose Jaw, SK, later moving to Calgary where she attended McDougall and Western Canada High Schools. In 1938, Flora moved to Ontario where she divided her time between Hamilton, Owen Sound and Tillsonburg. There, she worked on family farms and, during the war years, in the Hamilton munitions plants.
Later, Flora and family returned to Moose Jaw, SK where they worked both on and off the farm. Eventually landing in Calgary, Flora worked in the public relations field and resided in the communities of Scarboro, South Calgary and Mount Royal.
Throughout her life, Flora enjoyed politics and was politically active in the Social Credit party and, later, in the Reform Party of Canada. She relished each opportunity to question political candidates in depth before committing her support to them. She would attend political forums, volunteer and campaign on behalf of any candidate she decided to back. Later, when she was not quite so mobile, she would welcome candidates into her home and cross-examine them at length.
Flora’s first priority was always her family and she was rewarded with their deep love and affection. Flora did not allow her confinement to a wheelchair deter her from family gatherings. When she moved to the Bethany Care Centre and was confined to her bed, she enjoyed frequent and regular visits from her extended family.
