Obituary of James Edward Murphy
James (Jim) Edward Murphy, husband of Elinor, passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 after a brief illness at the age of 85 years.
Jim is survived by his much loved wife of fifty-eight years and best friend, Elinor; his son Dan; daughter Joan (John De Pasquale); grandsons, Gianrico (J.R.), and Marco; and his dear cousins, Mary Semple, and Ann Herring. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Nancy and her family, Michael, Jim and Barbara, of Vancouver Island; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his brother Harry (Spud).
Jim was born on July 14, 1920 in Ladner, BC. He followed his lifelong passion, aviation, by enlisting in the RCAF in WW II, serving in Canada and Britain. Jim became a pioneer in the helicopter industry in Canada and he enjoyed a long and far-reaching career with Okanagan Helicopters based in his beloved Vancouver, BC. Enduring to this day are many friendships that were established during those years in Surrey Park, then the flower of suburbia. A career move to Bell Helicopter in the 70’s brought with it a move to Calgary, which Jim and Elinor adopted as their permanent home after retirement during which time he remained an “armchair aviator”. Jim was devoted to family and friends and despite many challenges he remained active until his final illness.
