Obituary of Genevieve Agnes LaValley

Jeanette A. LaValley passed away peacefully with family by her side on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at the age of 96 years, marking the end of an era in the history of two Lethbridge area pioneering families. Born, raised and educated in Lethbridge, AB, Jeanette was the eldest of thirteen children born to Mary and Leon Synik. Jeanette married Emmanuel LaValley of Coaldale, AB in 1934, and followed her husband to Brandon, MB where he trained prior to going overseas in late 1939 with the First Division of the Canadian Army. Following Emmanuel’s embarkation, Jeanette and their two children, LeRoy and Vivienne, returned to Lethbridge. Jeanette was employed by the T. Eaton Company in the Notions Department for more than ten years, and continued to live in Lethbridge until moving to a ranch at Wardlow, AB in 1953. Shortly after retiring from ranching, “Man” and Jeanette moved to Kaslo, BC in 1972. They remained in Kaslo until Emmanuel was admitted to the Colonel Belcher Veteran’s Hospital in Calgary, where he passed away in 1986. Jeanette is survived by her son Roy (Cecilia) of Edmonton, AB, and daughter Vivienne (Dr. Robert Lindsay) of Calgary; nine grandchildren, Keith (Myrna) LaValley, Glen (Margo) LaValley, Judy (Brian) Lake, Janet (Stewart) Lomas, Patrick (Shaw) Malloy, Cathie VanVeller, Shannon Malloy, Susan (Todd) Fyfe, and Michael (Delia) Malloy; fourteen great-grandchildren, five step-sisters, Mary Lee and Margaret Metcalf, both of Lethbridge, AB, Rose Hunt of Taber, AB, Helen Tullock of Edmonton, AB, and Roberta Petri of Hyatsville, MD; and her step-brother Adam Cherwiniski of Taber, AB. Jeanette was predeceased by her parents Mary and Leon Synik; her husband Emmanuel LaValley; her sister Stella Russell; and brother Edward Synik, both of Vancouver, BC; two step-sisters, Sophie Green of Victoria, BC and Elizabeth Searle of Prince Rupert, BC; and two step-brothers, Ralph of Windsor, ON and Albert of Calgary. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Thursday, July 28, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E.) on Friday, July 29, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev.
