Obituary of Muriel Elizabeth Murray

Muriel Elizabeth Murray (Aunt Mern) (nee Sorby), beloved wife of the late Haig Murray of Calgary, passed away on Friday, July 15, 2005 at the age of 88 years. Muriel was born in Calgary on December 8, 1916 and attended St. John’s School. She lived much of her life on her beloved 11A Street N.W. “the best street in the world.” Muriel and Haig were married on June 30, 1953 at St. John’s Church. Prior to her marriage, she worked in the Income Tax department, and later worked with the Boy Scouts of Canada. Muriel was a member of St. John’s Roman Catholic Church on 10th Street N.W. from her childhood until its closure. Thereafter, she attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a lifetime member of the C.W.L. Muriel was also a very athletic woman in her youth, enjoying speed skating, golfing and curling with her husband and friends. She was also an avid bridge player and loved working on her daily crossword puzzle. Muriel had many friends of all ages, from the very young to those of her own generation. When her beloved son Douglas passed away in May 2001, his friends continued to play a large role in her life right until the end. Muriel was very blessed to have special neighbours Pamma and Ian Fitzgerald, and Tierney and Gemma, who were just like family to her and helped her in so many ways. She lived life to the very end and thoroughly enjoyed her first gondola ride in Banff on June 14th of this year with her nieces Margie and Elizabeth. Muriel is survived by her sister-in-law Betty Nixon; nieces, Elizabeth Weighill and Marg McCulloch; nephews, Michael Sorby and Ted Sorby; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband Haig; her son Douglas; sisters, Marie and Margaret; brothers, Jack and Douglas; and her parents Alan and Elizabeth Sorby.
