Obituary of Mae Alexander

Mae Alexander of Calgary passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 16, 2005 at the age of 101 years. Mae was born Anna Mahala Lienhart on July 14, 1904 in Sanborn, ND. She came to Canada in 1908 with her parents Jacob and Ruth Lienhard and brothers, Urban, Edward, Jack, and Donald and settled in Whitla, AB. Mae graduated from Calgary Normal School in 1922 and taught school in Foremost, Delia and Rocky Mountain House, AB. Mae married Lewis C. Bartsch in 1926 and lived in Lethbridge in the early 1930’s. Lewis Bartsch passed away in 1948. In 1952, Mae married Robert H. Alexander and lived in Calgary. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, Mae managed the Darling Hat Shops on 8th Avenue and retired in 1965. A life-long member of the IODE and Southern Alberta Pioneers. Mae enjoyed a full, rich and long life. We will miss her humour and her joy of life. Mae is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Dawn Bartsch; grandchildren, Russell, Melene (Sarji), Leslie, Monty; four great-grandchildren, Khi, Ajay, Arun, and Ashley; and step-daughter Norma. Mae was predeceased by her first husband Lewis Bartsch; her second husband Robert Alexander; and daughter Maxine. At Mae’s request no Funeral Service will be held.
