Obituary of Ho Lem

After an active career in business and public service, George Ho Lem passed away on July 9th at the Foothills Medical Centre. George’s success in business enabled him to step into a career of public service. First through the Jaycee’s of Calgary; then as an Alderman for the City of Calgary; and later as an MLA for the Province of Alberta. An enthusiastic native Calgarian, and a proud Albertan, George inherited his father’s belief that Canada should be a place for people of all cultural backgrounds to live, work and play. George worked to develop a climate of opportunity. He was President of the hospital board and was instrumental in the development of the Fanning Centre. As a director, he supported the Calgary Stampede to promote a community that played. George could claim many “First Chinese Canadian Awards”, but his leadership by example and dedication to a Multicultural Canada opened doors for many. George’s enthusiasm for public service was infectious and he became a mentor for others. George’s flamboyant style and love of horses drew him naturally to “the sport of kings”. His stable of champions proved that George could inspire not only men, but also horses to enter the race and became winners. George will be deeply missed by his wife Edie of forty years; his children George Jr. (Ursula) Ho Lem, Greg (Marilyn) Ho Lem, Cherie (David) Harper, and Caprice (Steve) DiSalvo; his grandchildren Chelsea, Shilo, Stephanie, Stephen, Claudia, Kevin, Candace, Ryan, and Madison; and as “UNCLE” to a large extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Angel. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Friday, July 15, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
