Obituary of Irene Mulholland Hoegg
Irene Mulholland Hoegg (nee Sutherland) passed away peacefully in the loving care of family and staff at the George Boyack Care Centre on Friday, June 17, 2005 at the age of 85 years.
Irene was born in Calgary on November 16, 1919 and spent her childhood years in Calgary, Red Deer and Medicine Hat where she met Frank Mulholland. Irene and Frank were married in Bow Island, AB in 1940 and subsequently lived and raised their children in Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, and, for two years, in Antwerp, Belgium. After Frank’s sudden death in 1958, Irene returned to Calgary where her love for her family, her independent and resourceful nature and her capacity for hard work allowed her to successfully raise her three children on her own with much moral support from her mother and sister and their families. When Irene and Edgar Hoegg married in 1973, their two adult families were blessed with an extended set of brothers and sisters. Irene and Edgar were blessed with thirty years together before Edgar’s passing in 2003. In her paid workforce years, after her children were grown, Irene was an Accountant at United Grain Growers. In her many years in the volunteer workforce, Irene constantly contributed to the community, chiefly through her activities at Pleasant Heights United Church and its United Church Women organization and through the IODE. Irene took classes at the Alberta College of Art and became an accomplished Pastel Artist and Watercolour Painter. Irene’s love for her family and friends sustained her through many tough years. Even in her advanced stages of Alzheimer’s Disease, Irene never lost her ability to recognize people or her ability to smile
Irene is survived by her sister Edna Groves of Calgary; her children, Maureen (Burke) Darling of Calgary, Joanie (Wilson) Winnitoy of Bragg Creek and Dennis (Liza) Mulholland of Calgary; and Edgar’s children, Maybert (Brent) McLean of Calgary, John (JoLynne) Hoegg and Allan (Karin) Hoegg, both of Vancouver. Irene will also be greatly missed by fifteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many other wonderful family members and friends.
