Obituary of David McGregor Roe
David McGregor Roe passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 9, 2005 at the age of 74 years at 51 6′ N 114 1′ W.
Dave was born on July 24, 1930 in Toronto to Jean Maude Young and Charles Robert Roe. He was close to his grandparents McGregor and Alice Young (Williams) and his cousin Peter. Dave, known as Rosie, attended St. Andrew’s College and has stayed close to his classmates over the years, still carrying on the tradition of mischief they had all mastered as young men. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in the early 1950’s. Dave’s fondest memories of this period were when he was with 414 Sabre Squadron stationed in Baden Soellingen, Germany. Dave moved to St. John’s in 1958 to work for Canadian Marconi and spent long periods on the DEW line in Labrador. In St. John’s he met the love of his life, Geraldine Mary Kelly, and they were married in 1960. He lived the next forty years in Newfoundland raising two boys David and Ian along the way. Dave was with the Signal Hill Tattoo, as well as being employed with Petro-Canada before his retirement. Known for his quick wit, sharp intellect, and easy going attitude, Dave loved telling stories about his world adventures (which often included a drink or three!). For Dave, life was something to be enjoyed, he made stress seem like a four letter word.
David is survived by two sons, David of Calgary and Ian of Vancouver, BC.; and grandchildren, Niall, Jean, and Tavin.
He was predeceased by his wife Geraldine who passed away in 1997. Dave also leaves behind many great friends in St. John’s, Calgary, Bali and other places around the world.
Cremation, no service to be held immediately. At David’s request, a Memorial Service and party will be held in his honour in St. John’s at a later date.
Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes can be made directly to T.B.D. Tudball Memorial Fund, St. Andrew’s College. In lieu of grief, smile and give someone a hug.
In living memory of David Roe, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, Telephone: (403) 276-2296.
