Obituary of Robert Ian Standen
It is with great sadness that the family of Robert (Bob) Ian Standen announce his passing on March 17, 2005 at the age of 77 years.
Bob was born on February 23, 1928 to Helen and Sam Standen of Calgary. He had a long and successful career in the Oil and Gas community here in Calgary working for Tenneco and Ultamar with his career culminating in his own production company Kelburn Developments. Bob was an all-round sportsman who had a successful career playing football for the Calgary West End Tornados and the Calgary Stampeders (1949-1951) where he made life-long friends. After football, Bob turned his eyes to his second love, the “ponies”, where he co-established Canada West Ranches bringing such greats as “Hollyburn” and “Love Your Host” to the Canadian thoroughbred circuit. If he was not at the track, he was at the golf course with his pals loving life. Bob was a true individual who did it his way, showering his family and friends with attention. He always found time to reach out to his loved ones with a warm smile, humourous story and words of love and support. Bob was the epitome of a friend, he touched so many with his love and caring for those who crossed his path. Wherever he went, he found a friend or acquaintance to share a kind word with. Those who knew him recognized his honour and grace and the genuine nature of his character. Bob will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Bob is survived by his loving wife and best friend Peggy, his son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey and Sharon Standen and their sons Brett and Ryan; his daughter and son-in-law Barbara and John McKay and their sons Patrick and Spencer; and his son and daughter-in-law Robert Jr. and Tina Standen and their daughter Taylor. He is also survived by his extended family members Dave and Eileen Baillee of Calgary.
