Obituary of Thomas Foster Brown
Thomas Foster Brown, formerly of Langley, BC, and recently of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at the age of 90 years.
Tom was born in Burnaby, BC in 1915. He attended Burnaby Central High School, and lived in the Vancouver area until 1996. He joined the Vancouver City Police Force in 1939 and held many ranks throughout his career, including Sergeant and Detective, until his retirement on March 1, 1975. Following his retirement, Tom worked for the Sheriff’s Office, Vancouver Court House as a Sheriff’s Officer.
In his youth, Tom participated in many Police Track and Field events, in the One Hundred Yard Dash, and in the July 1 Police Games at Brockton Point. He was a member of the Vancouver Police Pipe Band in the 1950’s, playing the bass drum; on the Police Ten-Pin Bowling Team and attended many competitions throughout the Pacific Northwest. He also played tenor sax and was part of the musical entertainment at the opening of Hollyburn Ski Hills, and was an avid golfer, playing into his 70’s. Tom joined the Progress Lodge 87 Masonic Temple in 1939 and was a Life Member of the Temple as well as a Past Master.
Tom married Gladys in 1941 in Vancouver where they lived until 1980, when they moved to Burnaby, eventually to Bowen Island and then to Langley. Tom and Gladys travelled to England and Europe as well as on a train excursion to eastern Canada; and they enjoyed many trips in their motor home.
Tom will be lovingly remembered by his daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Stuart MacMillan; and granddaughter Susan, all of Calgary. He was predeceased by his wife Gladys in 1996.
