Obituary of Robert Beattie

Robert “Hartley” Beattie of Calgary passed away peacefully at the Rockyview General Hospital on Friday, January 28, 2005 at the age of 92 years. Hartley was born in Convoy, County Donegal, Ireland where his father and grandfather were successively Ministers of the Presbyterian Church. His education included an M.A. from Trinity College in Dublin, Divinity Studies including a year at Princeton Theological Seminary and a Social Work Degree from the University of Toronto. During World War II, Hartley served as a Chaplain to the British Forces in Europe, Asia and the United Kingdom. After six years of service as Minister of Barry Parish Church in Scotland, he came to Canada in 1952 with his wife Dr. Nancy Beattie and their son Tudor. Hartley was the Minister of Knox Presbyterian Church in St. Catharines, ON from 1952 until 1954 before moving to Hamilton, ON to pursue a career as a Probation Officer and Social Worker with the Government of Ontario until his retirement in 1977. Both Nancy and Hartley were active in church and community affairs while living in Hamilton. He was an Elder at Central Presbyterian Church for many years. In 1996, Hartley and Nancy moved to Calgary to be with their son and his family. Hartley was predeceased by his beloved wife Nancy in 1999 after a wonderful marriage of fifty-five years. He is survived by his loving son and daughter-in-law Tudor and Lyn Beattie and his granddaughter Sara whom he adored. Funeral Services will be held at Living Spirit United Church (900 – 47th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
