Obituary of Andrew William Markin

Andrew W. Markin, beloved husband of Florence of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at the age of 81 years. Andy was born on March 5, 1923 in Pass Creek, BC. He was the first born son of William and Dora Markin. In 1928 the family moved to Mossleigh, AB to farm. After schooling, he moved to Calgary where he met Flo and they married in 1944. Andy’s love of mechanics led him to attend SAIT where he received a Certificate in Mechanics and Welding. Over the years he worked as a Mechanic at Mannix Construction and International Harvester. In 1968 he landed his dream job as a Mechanic for the City of Calgary Transit Department and remained there until he retired in 1985 at the age of 62. Andy’s many passions in life included fishing, camping, hunting, curling, golfing and dancing – especially to Country music with a fiddle accompaniment. He will be fondly remembered for his exuberant energy, his zest for life as well as his ability to tell a great story, with or without the facts. Andy’s hospitable, caring nature and generosity were always appreciated by his many friends and relatives. In Andy’s own words – “Good-bye, Good Luck and Be Happy” Besides his loving wife, Andy will be remembered and missed by his children Allan Markin (Jacqueline Flanagan), Diana Lodon (Norman), Jerry Markin (Patricia) and Kathryn MacPhail (Keith); his grandchildren, Rodney, Darren, Valerie, Kerry, Jess, Karlyn, Jane, Kyle and Kassidy; and his five great-grandchildren. Andy was predeceased by his parents William and Dora; and his brothers William and Jack; and his sister Dora. A Celebration of Andy’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Robert W. Mutlow officiating.
