Joel S. Shortt of Calgary passed away suddenly on Thursday, December 30, 2004 at the age of 45 years. He will be forever remembered by his loving wife of fifteen years, Mary McCorquodale, his son Dylan and his daughters, Carla and Christy Larson. Joel was born in Saskatoon, SK on August 3, 1959 and was raised in Rosetown, SK. His love of music led him, at the age of seventeen, to a brief career as a country and western music disc jockey at the local radio station CKOM in Rosetown. From 1979 to 1982, Joel attended the University of Saskatchewan where he graduated with Distinction from Law School in 1982. He was admitted to the Law Society of Alberta in 1983. Joel practiced law in Calgary specializing in insolvency construction and commercial litigation, most recently with the firm Thackary Burgess. Joel was a regular speaker at legal and industry seminars, and a lecturer at the University of Calgary and for the Calgary Board of Education on construction law. He was an associate member of the Surety Association of Canada and was actively involved on behalf of the Canadian Bar Association in legislative change to the Builder’s Lien Act. Joel appeared at all levels of court in Alberta, and also conducted litigation in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Joel had a passion for every endeavor he undertook. He was an avid fan and collector of music of all genres and, in addition to his busy law practice, he recently became executive producer for the recording label, Ruby Moon Records. An avid reader and history buff, Joel loved to travel with Mary and Dylan, enjoying many adventures along the way. A loving husband and father, a tireless advocate on behalf of his clients, and bon vivant, Joel will be sorely missed by his family, many friends and colleagues. Joel is survived by his parents, Bud and Betty Shortt of Coleman, AB; his sister Barbara Hauta; and his brother Michael.
